Online counselling: how a video session works

A conversation by video strikes many people at first as a fallback — as if it were less real than meeting in a room. In practice the difference is smaller than you would expect. After the first few minutes the screen barely matters; what counts is what you are talking about.

Who online counselling works well for

  • people who do not live in Wuppertal or nearby
  • parents of small children who cannot travel anywhere in the evening
  • people working shifts or irregular hours
  • anyone who finds it easier to talk from home
  • people without a car or with limited mobility

When meeting in person is the better option

Online is not always the better choice. If there is no room at home where you can talk calmly and without being overheard, a session in Wuppertal makes more sense. The same applies to an unstable internet connection: a conversation about something difficult that keeps dropping out is more draining than the journey would have been.

How a session works

  • You write to me through the contact form or on WhatsApp about what is on your mind — two or three sentences are enough.
  • We agree on a time and on the video service we will use.
  • Shortly before the session you receive the link. No registration or account is required.
  • The conversation lasts 50 minutes. At the end we decide together whether and when a further session makes sense.

What to prepare

Not very much: a quiet room, headphones, a charged device and ten minutes of buffer before and after. Headphones do not only improve the sound, they also make sure nobody in the next room can listen in. It also helps to jot down beforehand what you definitely want to talk about — otherwise it easily gets lost in the conversation.

Confidentiality

Everything said during a session stays confidential. Sessions are not recorded, neither video nor audio, and nobody sits off camera. If you are not sure you can speak undisturbed at home, please say so at the start — then we will structure the conversation differently.

Cost

The first introductory conversation of about 15 minutes is free. An online session of 50 minutes costs 60 euros, the same as a session in person. A full overview is on the Prices page.

An important note

Psychological counselling — online or in person — does not replace medical or psychotherapeutic treatment and is not intended for acute emergencies. In an acute crisis please call 112, or the free 24-hour Telefonseelsorge helpline: 0800 111 0 111 or 0800 111 0 222.

If you would like to try it, write to me through the contact form. The first conversation commits you to nothing.
